When we are improvising, it can be very hard to juggle with all the different aspects simultaneously : creating a storyline, a character, a decor etc. all at the same time can feel overwhelming. So let's take things differently!

In this workshop, we will learn how to create a visual universe intricate to the story, and use it as a framework for our scenes. That way the visual aspect will help us create the story and not be something we have to add over the top.

Using miming and objectwork but also other techniques like scene-painting and in-character-descriptions, we will learn how we can "paint a picture" in the minds of the audience, make them see what we imagine and ground our stories in specific settings. Letting that part of our imagination loose will feed our improvisations, make us go further, bigger, deeper in our stories. Once the universe is created, all we have to do is play in it, explore it, and discover it together with the audience...

What you’ll learn

  • Different techniques for creating a theatrical set

Who this is for

This is one of our Bubbles. These courses are intended for improvisers who already have an understanding of the basics, perhaps (but not necessarily) through our own Starting Steps courses. If you’re wondering which course is right for you, then feel free to email us.

This particular course is suitable for both intermediate and advanced improvisers. One can never work TOO much on emotional connection after all :)

About the teacher

Adrien Hoppe

Adrien was born in 1985 and started improv and theater simultaneously at the age of 16. After finishing secondary school in theater option (Athénée Royal Rixensart) he continued studying theater at the conservatory (conservatoire royal de Mons) while remaining in the Improvisation.be championship.

After conservatory he entered the BIL (Belgische Impro Liga - Flemish) and the LIP (Ligue d'Improvisation Professionnelle - French) while also doing contemporary theater with "Le Groupe Sanguin", a theater company that works collectively and without hierarchy on texts by belgian authors.

In 2014 he participated in his first english speaking international improv festival , wich was the Big If in Barcelona. This experience truly opened him up and broadened his view on what improv makes possible. Since then he's been experiencing and searching for new ways, new formats, new challenges to push his improv always further.
