Code of Conduct

ImproBubble is an organisation dedicated to improvisational theatre for the stage, the workplace and for life. Its main goal as an organisation is to create a safe space for creativity to go hand in hand with acceptance, playfulness, free expression and also empathy.

At the same time we aim to provide an environment to people of all ages, genders, ethnic backgrounds, physical abilities, cultural views, sexual orientations, religions and nationalities, and are currently working to encourage greater diversity and accessibility in the improv scene.

Therefore, any potential student who wishes to enroll in an ImproBubble course will be required to carefully read and agree to this Code of Conduct before attending their first class, in addition to the general guidelines below.

General Guidelines for Students

  • Support each other, on stage and off stage.

  • Work together as a team.

  • Listen to yourself and your scene partner.

  • Collaborate with your scene partner, unless it is unsafe or demeaning to do so.

  • Respect physical boundaries, on and off stage; don’t do anything physically dangerous to yourself or your scene partner.

  • Respect intimate boundaries, on and off stage.

  • Improvise from a place of fun, love, kindness and respect for your fellow improvisers and audience.

  • Safety, trust, support and you as a person are always more important than the temporary existence of an improv scene. It is ok to say ‘no’ or walk away from a scene you are not comfortable with.

  • Difficult subject matter in scenes is to be treated with full emotional intelligence, and your teacher is there to help you with this.

  • Help us create an environment free from harassment of any kind, on and off stage.

  • If a line has been crossed and you are notified of it, even if you disagree, accept the other person’s point of view with an open mind.

School Expectations of Students

  • Be punctual. Help our teachers and your classmates get the most out of your time together

  • Limit absences to the extent possible. Our curriculum is designed to take up the amount of lessons we set. Absences not only limit your growth, but put a dent in the group dynamic.

  • If 50% of the class is missing or over , it is up to the teacher’s discretion to choose if the class can reasonably still take place or must be cancelled.

  • In case a student is late or absent, it is their responsibility to inform their teacher in a timely manner.

  • In the case of more than 2 absences, it is up to the teachers’ discretion to decide if you are able to perform in your student showcase (if there is one associated with your module)

  • In the case of chronic absenteeism (40-50% of classes and over), it is most probable that you will be asked to repeat the course before moving on to the next step.

  • Be respectful of your teachers and classmates. This not only covers all our anti-harassment policy, but also basic courtesies such as putting your phone away, not speaking or whispering in class.

  • Feedback is an essential component of the learning process, and not a personal attack. Be open to receiving your teachers’ feedback- it is just information designed to foster growth and not criticism about you as a person.

School Expectations of Teachers

  • All ImproBubble teachers must abide by the same guidelines and code of conduct as students; everyone deserves equal treatment with regard to creating a safe space for learning and development.

  • Teachers are well aware of their hierarchical position towards students in and outside of classes. In cases where the nature of the teacher-student relationship might be, or become, of a more personal nature we urge both parties to inform, in all safety, ImproBubble’s Managing Director to make sure the professionality of the educational environment can be guaranteed for all concerned parties. This will be done in all transparency and without judgement by the Director and concerned parties.

  • Teachers are responsible for fostering a safe space. Therefore physical and intimate boundaries must be respected on and off stage.

  • Teachers are expected to treat any conversation you wish to have with them in private with full confidentiality and respect.

  • Feedback is a two-way street;  your opinion matters to us and we are open to learning and growing.

  • Teachers will be present at the time and place class is expected to take place.

  • If a teacher cannot give class as intended, ImproBubble will either provide a substitute teacher or reschedule.  Our aim is for students not to lose class.

  • In case for reasons outside of ImproBubble’s control (e.g. COVID), a class can no longer take place as scheduled, we will do our best to provide compensation in some form.

  • ImproBubble holds ourselves to the highest professional standard; we expect our teachers to impart their improv wisdom in a fun, accessible and inspiring manner
