In improvisational theatre, often the two distinctions you hear the most of is short form (performance games, as featured on ‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’) and long form (a continuous piece of improvisation inspired by an initial audience suggestion). Sandwiched somewhere in the middle (and arguably within the long form ‘family’), is freeform improvisation- where no rules apply.
As the name suggests, Freeform is liberating, because the improvisers can be and do anything! The ‘joy’ of freeform is that, because we are unconstrained by a game or narrative structure, our mind is free to truly explore every possibility on the stage, whether it is hyperrealist or completely surreal.
Kelly Agathos and Rishi Panchasara are complete freeform enthusiasts and this course was conceived to transfer their joy for the form onto YOU!
In weeks 1-4, Kelly will work on getting inspiration in different places and going beyond the ‘first thing we think about’. You will learn how to break conventional patterns of playing, leading to funkier scene work and a bunch of cool edits that could in themselves be the inspiration for the next scene you perform!
In weeks 5-8, Rishi will work on your reflexes, inspired by physicality, character and object work coupled with the fast paced, reactive improvisation his group De Kevins are known for.
All this will then be put together for a show!
What you'll learn
New ways of being inspired by audience suggestions
organic improv inspired by movements, edits, physicality and characters
seamless group work and support from on and off stage
reacting fast while staying in the moment
Who this is for
This is one of our Bubbles. These courses are intended for improvisers who already have an understanding of the basics, perhaps (but not necessarily) though our own Starting Steps courses. If you’re wondering which course is right for you, then feel free to email us.
This particular course’s focus is a must for improvisers of any experience level other than complete beginners, as it relates to one of the most crucial areas for improvisers’ growth and one that is often overlooked or forgotten about.
